"this is Alloen Endonesia's small notes only"
They include not only countries in Europe, but also in Asia Pacific region such as China, Japan, and even in Singapore. Furthermore, five countries will have 10 million or more people over 80 years old, including China, India, the United States, Japan and Indonesia.
The increment percentage of elderly population has consequences on the health problems and its management. Many degenerative diseases will ensue, such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Other diseases, which usually occur in elderly also being haunted, from prostate hypertrophy, stroke, instability, immobility, osteoporosis and fracture to depression, dementia, overactive bladder and insomnia.
These health problems become more complex when infections occur and become more overwhelming as there are more than two diseases in one elderly patient with decreased functional capacity. This situation will make the management of geriatric patients more difficult and need special approach. Unfortunately, some countries in Asia Pacific region still have low level of education. People do not know that health management in elderly is different from young adult and since commonly there are several diseases in one elderly patient, they do the doctor shopping: one doctor for each disease.
On the other hand, there is also lack of awareness –including the doctors theirselves- on geriatric medicine, who is geriatric patient and what kind of specification that needed to provide ideal health services for elderly. Furthermore, frequently there is ignorance in viewing elderly health problems as people assumed pathology as normal in older people.
As baby boomers now begin to approach old age, senior citizens are bound to place an enormous personal and socioeconomic burden on their families and society, unless prompt action is undertaken to quickly develop better prevention and treatment programs for many of the physical and mental ailments associated with old age.
Base on those have been stated above, we will hold Asia Pacific Geriatric Congress (APGC) and precongress international workshop in conjunction to APGC in November 2008 to provide better horizon and knowledge on geriatric problems in order to make better health management and exchange information and experiences vital to the advance of health and research in geriatric medicine.
